That gave Gates control of the entire PC operating ecosystem before the rest of the industry even grasped what was happening. It was an early masterclass in monopoly building. By the 1990s the United States Department of Justice sued Microsoft for abusing its dominance. Prosecutors demonstrated that the company had bullied competitors and manipulated software distribution to crush rivals such as Netscape.
